President Lorenzo Dellai visited yesterday the Povo headquarters of GrapiTech Foundation, which conducts research and development in the broad field of computer graphics. Welcomed by the Managing Director Raffaele de Amicis, Mr. Dellai has deeply appreciated the work of the research center, which has reached very high levels of self-financing, over 50%, and that is creating cutting-edge applications, with high attention at the strategic sectors of civil protection and planning.

As shown by the staff during the visit, through the use of the most advanced computer graphics applications, it is possible to create effective simulations of the changes that affect a neighbourhood simply by changing few parameters. One, by examples, can calculates the income generated by extensive deployment photovoltaic panels or the risks associated with possible flooding of rivers, by defining an area of environmental risk starting from data coming from weather sensors or gauges. Leveraging the list of telephone numbers of those persons residing in a given area, it is possible to run key simulations to create evacuation plans, deploy emergency countermeasures to protect the population and other actions to save lives and goods. The combined use of databases and interactive technologies allows creation of "virtual worlds" and custom software applications to meet the needs of the territory, relevant to the governance in a more advanced and sophisticated way. Other applications are possible in the areas of cultural, educational games, and generally of multimodal interfaces in many industrial sectors.

Fact Sheet: Foundation Graphitech
The Graphitech Foundation, Center for Advanced Computer Graphics Technologies, based in Trento (Povo, via Alla Cascata 56), was created in July 2002 as a joint initiative of the INI-GraphicsNet Stiftung, Istituto Trentino di Cultura-present Foundation Bruno Kessler (FBK) and the University of Trento. The Foundation was established to conduct research and development in the vast area of computer graphics technologies with the aim of improving the competitiveness of the Trentino region in the development and application of advanced computer graphics.
The Foundation has helped in transferring knowledge between research and industry sector by promoting research activities within the following areas:

  • Geo-visual analytics.
  • Creation of virtual worlds and interactive applications.
  • Technologies to support interactive design and development process
     product.

The Foundation is now involved in numerous international projects, also supported by the European Union.
