This project aims at the development of a mobile conceptual design system based on Augmented Reality technology Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies promise substantial improvements in fields like engineering and development of commercial products (e.g., cars, motorbikes, or consumer electronics). SpaceDesign Pro is a project which aims at the development of a mobile conceptual design system based on AR technology. This system, which is an evolution of the existing SpaceDesign system developed at GraphiTech, aims at supporting the development and construction of industrial prototypes in a mobile environment. By partially or totally replacing the physical mock-up models with virtual models (i.e., combining the use of physical mock-ups with virtual models) the user can simulate changes to the physical mock-up by manipulating the virtual model, hence considerably accelerating the design workflow from concept to mock-up evaluation and review. In addition to the original functionality provided by SpaceDesign, SpaceDesign Pro will allow the user to: • work at any desired location • include functionality which addresses artistic/creative aspects (such as advanced coloring and texturing functions) Compared to static (i.e., location-based) conceptual design systems, the availability of a fully mobile system permits to address an entirely new range of applications: the use at fairs or exhibitions, in advertising campaigns, to customize products directly at the client's home, or be employed in meetings and conferences. Therefore we are convinced that this project can provide a significant contribution not only to the scientific community, but to the industrial and economic sector as well.
